Jaebeom quietly sat down in the Starbucks coffee house, sipping on drink, as he draped his right arm over the backrest of the chair. High school students walked in made noise, ordering at the counter and gossiping loudly at one far corner of the restaurant. He watched as one of the older boys popped, demonstrating his skills to the girls like a male peacock displaying its feathers. Jaebeom wasn’t sure what to think of this, as he chuckled and turned away, looking at his watch, then to the door.

Jaebeom berated the idea of arriving 15 minutes early, having to wait for his lunch date. Shortly, he went back to the counter to order himself the same drink.

“Hey, back so quickly? You got stood up?” said the young woman behind the counter. She gave a quick smile as she wiped her newly washed hands on the apron she was wearing.

“Nah, I’m early. I suppose promptness has its disadvantages.”

The woman chuckled and asked, “What would you like this time?”

“I’ll have the same thing. 1Double chocolate chi—

“—chocolate chip Frappucino,” finished Victoria, who stepped to stand beside him in line. The woman behind the counter looked at the two, and asked Victoria if she would like to order something. She politely declined with a small nod of her head. The woman showed a smile before nodding to Jaebeom and turned around to make his purchase.

“How did you know it was me?” he said looking slightly down at her. Her tall heels made her almost the same height with the man she was standing next to.

“I recognized your voice from when we spoke over the phone,” she smiled politely. Before Jaebeom could ask about how he knew about the drink, she said,

“If you’re wondering about the drink, it was my ex-boyfriend’s favourite. I just took a shot, and I guess it’s your favourite too?”

“I wouldn’t say my favourite, but I was craving something sweet,” he said. Once Jaebeom received his drink, the two of them sat down.

“So, Park Jaebeom-sshi, to what do we owe the pleasure? You told me over the phone that you were an FBI Special Agent, but you didn’t really elaborate what you—“ Victoria trailed off, looking unsure what word she wanted to use. Jaebeom smiled and sipped on his Frappucino.

“I’m not with the FBI,” he said. She gave him a sharp look, as if caught off-guard, “Do you know what dream sharing is, Victoria-sshi?”

Victoria gave him a hard look, her eyes sharp and her mouth closed.

“It’s the practice of manufacturing a dream, and engaging the conscious mind into the neurological activity. This is called Lucid Dreaming. Now, with proper techniques, we can teach the dreamer to stay in the dream for an unprecedented amount of time, and to actively participate in it.” Jaebeom picked up his drink and sipped before he continued,
“Now, what’s interesting is if one could actively participate in their own dream, changing and controlling the events that occur within it, what would happen if one could participate in other people’s dreams; three or four people actively interacting with their conscious unconsciousness? In fact, certain individuals have learned how to manipulate a subject’s mind in such a way that they can extract private information, secrets, from deep within their subconscious. With such an intrusive nature, it would seem unethical for someone to use this practice for that reason, but interestingly enough, the FBI have special underground teams for this very purpose; to delve into the minds of criminals and offenders to assess their violations.”

Jaebeom sipped more of his drink as Victoria stared into his eyes. He then asked rhetorically,

“But you knew all of this, didn’t you?”

Victoria breathed silently as Jaebeom explained the practice of dream mechanics, but she didn’t bother to answer his question. Sternly she said,

“What is this about?”

“Firstly, we need to know whether you’re willing to help us.” Jaebeom said. His arms were laid casually on top of a yellow manila folder that Victoria didn’t notice until now. Victoria laid her eyes on it, and Jaebeom noticed.

“Before you find out what you have to do, we need to know if you’re on board.”

“You know top secret government information about me that no one but a select group of persons should know. Not only is it classified, but from what you’re telling me, you can be taken into custody for conspiracy, coercion, and extortion.”

Jaebeom simply chuckled before saying, “The FBI asked us to do this.”

Victoria was left speechless.

“I work for a special impartial agency that takes commissions from high paying individuals and companies to extract information from certain subjects though the use of dream sharing,” Jaebeom lied, “Now, why are you so special, you ask? Well, it involves your boyfriend.”

Victoria’s mouth gaped open slightly. Jaebeom spoke quietly under his breath as to not catch the stares of people around them in the store.

“He needs your help. He’s about to embark on a very dangerous mission and there’s a chance that he won’t survive,”

“But that’s impossible, he designs buildings—he’s an engineer, an architec—“

“Yes, that’s right. He is an Architect, but instead of building bridges, he’s designing cathedrals in the Amazon, cities in the sky. He designs dreams, Victoria-sshi.”

Victoria just looked at him, her eyes stern.

“There’s no doubt that you know what extraction is, but do you understand the risks involved with multi-level dreaming?”

“Dreams within dreams. Park Jaebeom-sshi, I once worked for a branch of the FBI where we shared dreams with psychopaths and schizophrenic serial killers. I understand the risks of dying within a heavily sedated dream, being stuck in raw infinite dreamspace for an unprecedented amount of time, but the risks involved with my previous work far outweighed risks of extraction, Park Jaebeom-sshi, but … you knew all of this already, didn’t you? Now, what do you want from me?”

“Do you love your boyfriend, Victoria-sshi?”

“Yes, of course. Ok Taecyeon is very good to me, but—“

“I understand. If he lied about his occupation, what else would he be lying about? Well, if it’s any consolation, he’s a very good man, it would be a shame for him to be stuck in limbo for the rest of his life.”

Jaebeom took another long sip of his drink as Victoria looked away, absorbed by the news that there was a chance that her boyfriend could die.

“What is he trying to do? Why does he have to do this?”

“It’s his job. Why haven’t you told him about your part-time job?”

“I don’t do that anymore,”

“Regardless. You can discuss this later with him, but I know what you can do. You can ensure his survival on his mission, but I cannot tell you what it is until I know you’re on board.”

“Why not?”

“It’s classified information.”

Victoria continued staring at him before she said,

“What do I have to do?”

Jaebeom slid the manila folder over to her side of the table, and opened it for her.
